Time and proportions

In the Italian town of Chiavari, facing the Mediterranean Sea lies the most significant example of traditional Ligurian chairs, crafted by artisans for over two hundred years.
Fascinated by this chair, which seemed to reflect this area's historical and cultural heritage, I regularly visited the site to do some research.

Later, I met a local craftsman who told me how this chair changed over time, also mutating the way of living at the table.
In that period, the Industrial Revolution spread across Europe; meanwhile, the chair industry flourished in Chiavari. At that time, only the upper class could afford chairs of this manufacture; naturally, the “meaning of design” changed according to the historical period.

With this project we wanted to think of a chair to enhance those moments of conviviality sitting at the table with family or friends; a seat that could suit the modern lifestyle, with a revisited structure and design, more generous in proportions.
After several briefings with the artisans, after various trials and errors, the CC01 was born: a chair that pursues lightness, sinuosity, and the finest elegance.

時代とプロポーション

地中海に面したキアバリというイタリアの町に、200年以上も職人の手仕事によってつくり続けられているリグーリア州で最も代表的な伝統工芸の椅子がある。

この地域で育まれた歴史や文化を凝縮したようなこの椅子の魅力に惹かれ、定期的に現地に出向きリサーチを始めた。

しばらくして、この椅子を作っている職人と出会い、話を重ねる中でこの椅子が作られた時代の習慣や食卓での過ごし方に違いが見えてきた。
当時、欧州では産業革命が起こり、ここキアバリの町でもその影響を受け椅子の産業が盛んになった時代である。
しかし、まだ椅子は特権階級しか手に入れる事はできない時代でした。そのような時代にデザインされた椅子は、現在デザインされる椅子とは当然その意味合いが異なる。

このプロジェクトでは、大切な家族や友人達と食卓を囲むconvivialな時間をサポートする椅子、現代のライフスタイルに合ったデザインを目指し、よりオープンでリラックスできるプロポーション、それに伴うデザインと構造の変更を行った。

そうして職人たちと共に幾度も議論を重ね、試行錯誤の末に完成した椅子CC01は、見た目からは想像もできないほどの軽量さ、なめらかな曲線美、究極なまでにエレガンスを追及した椅子として誕生しました。
