A little innovation

This project was born with the intention of turning an abstract image into a physical sensation.
After having produced various mockups and done many trials to understand the desired imagery, we worked on the physical sensation to achieve.

The studied cross-section determined the overall sinuous and organic design of ELSA.
The iconic shell is composed of two layers of polyurethane foam – soft and rigid – to ensure both strength and comfort, always pursuing the minimum thinness.

The cover might seem like rigid saddle leather due to the peculiar sewing details at the edges; on the contrary, it is elastic, made of soft leather stretched over the molded shell to accommodate the body and adapt to its shape, unveiling the ergonomic forms of the seat.
This is the most interesting feature of this product: a small innovation derived from the production process itself.

ELSA’s legs have an integrated swivel system to enable more open dialogue between people and space.

Its name comes from a beautiful hilly Tuscany area called Val d’Elsa.

小さなイノベーション

このプロジェクトは抽象的なイメージを身体感覚へと近づけていく感じで進み始めた。
幾度となくモックアップを作り検証を繰り返していく過程を経て、今度は身体的感覚を基にイメージを膨らませながら検証を進めた。

しばらくするとこのプロジェクトの特徴の一つである小口の断面のディテールと向き合う事になる。
このディテールはElsa全体の輪郭の印象に影響し、ある意味で形のない有機的なものに対してフォルムを決定づけた。

もう一つの特徴は軟質/硬質ポリウレタンによる二層構造によるシェル、薄さを追求しながらも適度な弾力を持った座り心地を実現した。
小口の処理によりサドルレザーで製作されたかのように見えるシェルは、実はソフトレザーによって張り込まれているため弾力があり、外観と座り心地に良い意味でギャプを生んでいる。そして、それこそがこのプロジェクトの最大の特徴であり、モノ作りを通して生み出される小さなイノベーションだと感じている。

Elsaラウンジチェアは脚部には回転機構が内蔵されており、身体を優しく包み込みながらも、人と空間を繋ぐオープンなコミュニケーションを可能にする。

Elsaとはトスカーナ地方の美しい丘陵地帯の名称。
